Going to Extremes

John 12: 24-26
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.  He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.  If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”

I think what really struck me about this passage is the part about hating our life in this world; I thought, well I don’t hate my life.  It was then that God started speaking to me about how this wasn’t about our life, but the way we live it.  We hate the part of us that desires to sin, the part of us that falls short of the glory of God.  It’s about that part of us that chooses to live without Christ’s authority.  We must choose to die to ourselves so that we will have “life eternal.”

I think this is one area that the Pharisees really struggled with.  I mean, they had many notable problems; the most commonly mentioned being their traditions, but I think even more so the Pharisees enjoyed their life.  They enjoyed their position, and were threatened by Jesus, and His authority.  They didn’t like the message of “follow me and you will do these signs and more,” because that would mean giving up their position.  They had perfected the art of sacrifices, teaching in the temple, and acting the part of a follower of God – they forgot God.  In our lives we can choose to do the things we know are right – read the bible, pray, go to church every time the doors are open, we can even tell people about Jesus, but if you don’t come under the Master – you don’t die to yourself, everything you do will be in vain, there will be no fruit, and there will be no life eternal.
